Ultimate Frisbee Rules

1. The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end.

2. Players: Each team usually has seven players on the field at a time.  The extra players will sub in during the game.  Try to sub in and out about every 5 minutes.  Have another parent keep time for you so you know when to sub.

3. Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line.  The defense throws the disc to the offense.  This is called a “throw off.”  If the Frisbee lands on the ground in-bounds during the throw off, a player from the receiving team picks up the Frisbee and passes it to a teammate.  If the Frisbee lands out-of-bounds during the throw off, the Frisbee is put into play by the receiving team at the point on the playing field nearest to where it crossed the out-of-bounds line.

4. Movement of the Frisbee: The Frisbee may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate.  Hand-offs are not allowed.  The Frisbee must be passed.  A player may take 3 steps after catching the Frisbee before she throws it to a teammate.   She may also pivot on one foot (like in basketball) before throwing.  The person with the Frisbee is called the “thrower.”  Only one player, called the “marker,” may guard the thrower at any one time.  The marker must be an arm’s length away from the thrower.  The thrower has 10 seconds to throw the Frisbee.  The marker counts aloud to 10 at one second intervals (e.g. “one apple, two apple, three apple,….”).  If the thrower has not released the disc by the count of 10, a turnover results.

5. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point.  Ask another parent to be the score keeper.  A player can’t catch the Frisbee and then take 3 steps to get into the end zone.  He must be in the end zone when he catches the Frisbee to score.  Teams switch end zones after every point.

6. Change of Possession: When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

7. Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained.
